USING THE INDEX

Numbers enclosed in brackets refer to a volume. There are three volumes so each page number or sequence of page numbers will be preceded by a volume number. For example:
Doe, John [2] 2, 5, 8-10 [3] 12-18
refers to items on John Doe found in Volume II [2] on pages 2, 5, and 8 through 10, and also in Volume III [3] on pages 12 through 18.
Items selected for indexing include personal names, locations, geographic landmarks, organizational entities, company names, historical references and other items deemed of historical or genealogical interest.
For each surname there may be multiple entries based on the occurrence of formal given names, nicknames and pseudonyms. "(Miss)" or "(Mrs.)" is appended to any name entry when necessary to clarify gender. Professional and honorary titles are excluded except to distinguish between two identically named but different individuals.
Place names include the county and state where known.
Except for obvious typos created by the original author, all entries are entered as written. Where a colloquial or legacy spelling would place an entry in a non-obvious position in the index, a supplemental entry using contemporary spelling is added for the convenience of the reader.
Military units with a numeric designation appear in the index before the "A"s.
